The Ellensburg Rodeo
Each year the city of Ellensburg, Washington hosts the popular Ellensburg Rodeo. Ellensburg is a city of 17,000 in the central part of the state. It lies in the Kittitas Valley and is the largest city and county seat of Kittitas County. The Ellensburg Rodeo was first started in 1923 as a local competition among ranch hands. It has grown to become the most popular rodeo in the state and a stop on the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association Event.
The Ellensburg Rodeo takes place each Labor Day Weekend at the Ellensburg Rodeo Fairgrounds. The rodeo features over 500 contestants competing for hundreds of thousands of dollars in prize money. The nation's best riders, ropers, and wrestlers compete in one of the nation's best rodeo arenas. In addition to bull riding, bronco riding, and steer roping, the rodeo features a parade, clowns, and the Miss Rodeo Washington Pageant. The rodeo also has live music and attendees can get refreshments at the old, western style "Trading Post Saloon".
The fun of the Ellensburg rodeo on Labor Day Weekend is heightened by the Kittitas County Fair, which occurs at the same time at the fairgrounds. The first organized Kittitas County Fair occurred in 1885. It started out as a gathering of local farmers and ranchers showcasing the fruits of their labor. The Fair has grown into a five-day event with a wide range of events. The Fair is also used as a gathering place for the Yakama Indians
In 1923, the Kittitas County Fairgrounds were built on their current location. Since that time, the Ellensburg Rodeo and Kittitas County Fair have been combined into one big celebration. Visitors are advised to make accommodation plans well in advance as local hotels and motels can be quite full on Labor Day Weekend.
