Has anyone used "The" Bitless Bridle?
I am referring to Dr. Cook's one, not a hackamore, bosal, or sidepull. The logic of it seems to make sense. My horse really does not like the bit (and it's a loose-ring French-link snaffle) so I was wondering if this might help. I figured I'd ask people who knew, not just go by the testimonials, of which I have no way of knowing whether they are biased or not. I realize I can't use it for Dressage but hey I could use it for cross country and show jumping if it works.
If you have used it, please include what you liked and/or didn't like about it. Does it really control the horse (Thoroughbred types)?
I first saw the bitless bridle at western states horse expo and was interested. I was looking for something to start my 3yr old Arab in. I've been really happy with it, however, she listens well to it because its the only thing she's ever used, and all of her training has been done in it.
I also used it on my 13yr old Ap/TB cross, who is HEAVY in your hands and really doesn't like the bit (same one you're using). He goes remarkably well in it, though not as good as the baby. The only problem I've had with it is the noseband itself. There was a ride where I really had to get after him to carry himself, and used my reins a lot, and by the end of the ride, it had rubbed some of the fur off the bridge of his nose. I picked up a fleece halter pad and put that on the nose band and haven't had a problem since then.
The best part about the bridle? It's got a 30day guarantee, so if you don't like it, you can send it back and get your money back. Or if you bought the biothane version and wanted a leather one, you can send the biothane one back and get the money credited toward a leather one.
If you plan on using it on your horse, remember, that just like in a bit, the horse has to be trained to accept and understand it. While it is fairly intuitive for the horse, I'd give him (her?) a chance to get used to it. Start by bitting him up with it, maybe some lunging and long-lining, then hack around, and then start to really work the horse. Something to keep in mind, is it doesn't have the possibility of pain as a back up. With a bit, if you've got a run-away horse, because you've got a piece of metal in his mouth, you've got the ability to force their head around to stop, because of the way the bit works. Because the bitless bridle works through pressure on the side of their face, you don't have the pain-factor as brakes if you need it.
I've also seen people use them and have them not work, because of the way they had it adjusted. the noseband should sit about 3 inches above the corners of their mouth and the noseband should be very snug (so it doesn't slip around)
So I guess the long and short is that I love mine, but I can see how they might not work for some people.
I hope you find something (this or something else) that works for your horse.
