How to get a horse to take a bit?
I have an 8 year old Ap. that will fight when you try to get her to take the bit. She will fling her head way up high. She will pull really hard. She broke a lead rope yesterday trying to get away from me and the dreaded metal thing. I use a regular smooth jointed snaffle. Her teeth are fine and been floated. I just do not know what to do. I have tried treats, molasses, etc.. She is pasture sour for sure and lazy. She does better with kids then adults as far as riding. Try to get her in anything faster than a trot she acts up. I can deal with that..but just stumped on how to get her to take the bit without fighting. I know I can try a hackamore or a bosal bridle, but you get better rein response using a bit..IMO!!
Thanks guys I will most definitely try that!
Will try mint spray to.. she love those peppermint treats alot.
Anything is worth a shot as long as it will not hurt her..that will just make it worse!
This is what I did(my horse acted the exact same way):
I bought some apple flavored bit wipes from a tack store but you might want to use honey. Put honey on the mouthpiece of the bit and slide it in your horse's mouth. Also, loosen the bit so that it just barely touches the corners of her lips. Take the reins off and leave her in a stall or small paddock with her bridle on. Do this for about fifteen minutes a day and just leave her alone while keeping a close watch on her, should something happen. This should get her to accept the bit better and it will also teach her to get a hold on the bit herself. Most people will shove a bit high up in the horse's mouth thinking they can force the horse to give in, but what we need to teach them is to hold it in their mouth and sort of want to respond to the bit. A sign that this is working is when you take the bit out, your horse might start holding the bit with her teeth as you slide the bridle off.
