How to sooth a 1 yr old with a double ear infection.?
He has a double ear infection and screams for hours at a time. Nothing seems to work. He was at the ER and they put him on antibiotics. Is there anything else to help the pain he is having.
Thanks he isnt my child but is a so called friends baby. I watch him a lot and give her lots of advise on how to take care of him. She is 20 years old and not mature enough to have a child. I am only a year older but grew up with 6 younger brothers and sisters. And I love babies and did a lot of babysitting when I was younger, and now watch her little boy all the time
There are several options. It takes 48-72 hours for most kids to start to feel better once they are on antibiotics, so pain control is important. After 2-3 days if there is no improvement, the child should see the doctor again to make sure the medicine is working.
In the mean time, you can try a dose of tylenol, or motrin, or alternate between the two every 3 hours (e.g. tylenol at 9AM, motrin at noon, tylenol at 3pm, etc.)
Warm compresses can sometimes help (like a warm washcloth held to the ear). There is also an herbal pain reliever by Similisan that works for some kids (though it didn't help a lot for mine).
Finally, the mom could talk to the doctor about numbing drops for the ear (like Auralgan for example). These can't be used long term, but a dose or two is certainly OK.
FYI - Antibiotic drops like Floxin can help if there is an external ear infection or perforation but are not numbing drops.
