awesome show horse but crazy trail horse. any advice?
i have a QH mare that is amazing in the show ring. never gives me any trouble. i can ride her at my house in my round pen or even in my driveway leading to my barn. but when iget her into the field next to my house or in the woods behind my house, she starts to panic. she trotts the whole way and tucks her head under like a barrel horse. (which she was b4 i bought her) she is used to running in ym field but she gets herself so freaked out seh starts to rear on me. i have to get off her and walk her to my house. i have a thomthumb in her mouth now and thinking about going to a hackamore. i have tried just using a rope halter and a bossal but they dont work either. any other advice would be awesome!
A lot of horses hate going on trails alone, it makes them very nervous-- so go with a friend until she gets used to it (some horses never do) PLUS it's safer for both of you that way in case you fall off or an accident happens. But before you go on the trail, lunge her and get all of her excess energy out-- so she isnt tempted to bolt with you while on the trails. ALSO, after a bath or something on a nice day, talk her for a walk on the trails while she dries off-- graze her out there (grass only! stay away from poisionous plants!) and desensitize her to it all! Be patient, It may take awhile for her to be more comfortable with the trails--you can ride her while she is still getting used to it-- but walk her around there for a week or so first!
As for the bit, Tom Thumbs are harsh bits, especially if they arent used right-- horses have bad reactions to them sometimes and maybe thats why she is rearing. Changing to a hackamore may seem less sever but in actuality if they are used wrong they can be MORE harsh. Try a mellower bit-- I suggest a three piece kimberwick

Kimberwicks still offer a good amoutn of leverage but are less severe and less prone to pinch as they break into three pieces over the tounge. It worked very well for my rowdy thoroughbred!
