What's the difference between Parelli and Clinton Anderson?
I'm a huge Clint Anderson fan, his methods helped my horse to stop being such a snot on the ground, and when I told my friend about some ground work things I do with my horse she's like, "Oh! So you've trained a Parelli horse!" I've never heard of Parelli and last night I saw a question about her or him... I don't know, about what they thought and 9 out of 10 people spoke negatively about the Parelli method. Are Clint and Parelli similar? I really do love Clint, but why don't people really like Parelli?
Clinton Anderson is more plain and to the point and his methods aren't frilly and over-stretched and over-thought like Parelli.
Parelli: if your horse is intro-vert brain extrovert--blah blah blah
Clinton: If your horse is running over the top of you do this...
CA does wiggle the rope like Parelli, but he's added other things to it to make it his own (tap the line with the stick) and he's got (they all do) other very similar techniques, but again, CA just gets to the point and Parelli drags it on and on with way too much pshyco-babble and some of the techniques don't get the straight shot result that CA does.
I use CA's methods all the time and get great results. The big difference is that Parelli tends to make it sound like you have to always be wimpy gentle with your horse (he might not mean to make it sound like this, but this is the end result a lot of times and the horses from clients that I've had to fix..who have followed Parelli have horses that resent being pushed for good quick responses, they get lazy and over-desensitized)
CA is more: do this and get the result. end of story. step by step and there you go.
Parelli is more: wiggle and point and use LOADS of body language vs physical pressure and be quiet and don't be demanding.
CA pushes the horse (in a good way) and I find that I can fix really bad problems caused by Parelli people who stay with low energy too much, tend to nag to be nice to the horse....
Parelli and CA and John Lyons and Chris Cox and all the rest...all have the same basic idea: no force, no pain to train the horse.
They all come from studying the old masters, among them, the big name, TOM DORRANCE.
Also, CA has a stick and string and Parelli does too.
As for why people don't like Parelli:
1. he pushes his "buy my stuff and you'll be the perfect trainer" crap way too far.
2. he basically pushes his way or the highway mentallity
3. people who really get into it and pay hundreds of dollars for his entire program tend to seem cult like and also critical of anyone who doesn't do it exactly like they do
4. he draws things out so long-winded with all the crap about horseinalities being right brain extrovert and right brain introvert...which tends to make people make excuses for why their horse acts a certain way. I've been training long enough to know that horses are not that complicated. And I tend to lean more towards the simpler stuff, not all the "get out the chart and see what my horse is so I know how to train" It's not that complicated.
5. he is way over-priced and judgemental of other trainers (he boasts that he can work in a 2 ft high "pen" made of string or whatever but hey! he does use a round pen at his ranch...um,..hello? hypocrite)
___The only thing that I "like" about Parelli is that he has brought awareness to the plight of the horse being treated without abuse. That's it.
I did do his Level 1 a long time ago, but it was so full of "games" that I got sick of it and went with CA and Lyons who were more bare bones training.
