Any ideas on how to mangage college and barrel racing?
Right now I am seventeen and only have a year left until college. At the same time though I've involved with livestock and "emerged in the rodeo scene" for a while, I have little experience with horseback riding and eventually want get into barrel racing. I should have started much earlier but it is now that I actually have the chance because of several reasons that prevented me before.
Is it to late to start now? Has anyone had to juggle college and horses and how did you manage it?
I am finishing my undergrad this year (5th yr) and going on to veterinary school next fall. My horse has been with me all of the way.
Basically, it is possible, but be prepared to have no social life outside of horses. I work about 40 hrs a week (mainly to pay her board and other expenses), plus a full 18 credit load. Most days I don't have enough sleep from working too much, and I am eating ramen for the 6th day in a row.
As horrible as it sounds, I completely believe it is worth it. I have the option to leave my horse at my parent's house to sit for free until I am out of college, but I don't want to do that, I want her with me, and while I can only afford lessons once every 2-3 months, I am still having fun just riding around.
If you are prepared to work very hard, and not go and party and slack like most freshman do (and even some seniors) in college, keeping a horse with you is attainable.
If you do get a horse, make sure it is an older one that will be ok with days off a week, or possibly an occasional full week off. Some horses can sit for months and ride perfectly the next time, others fall apart after 3 days off (ie my mare).
