What is the best bedding for wood floor stalls when bedding won't stay dry?
My 2 horses can go in and out of barn stalls at will. The pasture near entrance to barn is very mucky now from rainy weather, so I'm sure its dragged in with them. There are 2 stalls-one with direct outside access and an inner one where they mostly hang out/lay down {that one stays much drier than the other). The floor is wood and currently I use Equine Fresh pellets . I like the pellets mostly, but not sure if I'm doing it right. The outer stall esp turns dark brown and I pick out the manure as best I can-but lots of times the pieces are so small that it falls through the fork(narrow plastic). If I scoop out all the questionable and damp bedding, thats almost all of it.I thought one of the advantages of pelleted bedding was not having to shovel it all out.I started with 6 bags for a 11 x 9 stall and add a bag each week plus... I pick almost every day, Any ideas? My horses are mostly white and invariably lie down on damp spot-not so white now..... Thanks
I had the same problem when my horses were on my farm. What I suggest is to take the area infront of their stalls and drain it/dry it out. Then put a draining system in that allows about 5-8 feet infront of their stalls to be dry (reasonably). Then take and use rubber matts in the front of the stall door way, you dont have to cover the whole stall with the matts because that is expensive, but the front area with rubber mats should be good enough. Then you use whatever you use for bedding and spread that around, and over the mat to. The matt allows the wet/muddy stuff to be scopped up easier as well as not seep into the ground causing a big hole when you first step in the stall.
The other thing is you mostlikely are going to have to pick the stalls out every day to keep down on the mess, but with what I've suggested the whole stall is alot drier and not a big "pig pen mess".
good luck
