What type of saddle and padding do I need for trail riding?
I am 5'6" and weigh about 230 pounds. What kind of saddle and pad should I get to ease the strain on my horses back? My horse has a nice muscular solid build and is about 15.3 hh, so please don't make fun of my weight killing my horse. I don't ride very much, maybe once a weekend, if its nice. I am losing weight, about 2 pounds a week. I would just like a recommendation on what kind of saddle to buy. I have looked into the shock-absorbing ones, but I don't know what to do! when i ride, it's is usually at a steady walk . please let me know!
You can use any saddle for trail riding, it doesn't matter. I would probably suggest a synthetic western saddle. The synthetic saddles weigh significantly less than a traditional western saddle (and the cost less!). I would recommend a gel pad (one of the shock absorbing ones), and then a traditional thicker fleece saddle pad.
Make sure that the saddle fits the horse properly. It is bad for a horse to carry a lot of weight with an improperly fitting saddle. Even an empty improperly fitting saddle can severely hurt your horses back! If you are unsure, have someone experienced go saddle shopping with you! The tack store should also be able to help you.
