Would this saddle be okay for barrel racing?
We do pony rides, and my mom bought this saddle to fit on our largest ponies (think borderline horse height). It also fits on my horse, who is short and compact. I was wondering if it would work as a barrel racing saddle because when she bought it, my mom said it was a "ropers" saddle... I think. She thinks it will be all right, but I thought I would ask around. Here's a link to the photobucket account with pictures. I'd rather not buy a new saddle just for it, but if I have to... I will.

If the saddle fits you well, then it will work for now. It's big and heavy, and has long, squared skirts, a long seat, pretty slick swells, and a thick, short horn, so it's not going to be anything close to ideal, but it is what it is.
Take the rubbers off of the horn so it's not as fat so you can get a hold of it better, and maybe add some buckin rolls to the swells to help keep you in the seat. You could also swap out the stirrups for some oxbows so you can stick your feet in deep and not worry about losing stirrups (rubberband your feet into your stirrups).
If the saddle fits you, then go for it. It won't likely lead you to a world title, but it'll be ok to use for a while. If money weren't an object, then I'd say get a barrel saddle, you don't see any minivans flying around race tracks, you need the right equipment for the sport. Barrel saddles are designed with BARREL RACING PERFORMANCE in mind, your roper doesn't have any of the attributes you'd be lookin for. But until you get into it, it's good enough for now.
