Question about showing.?
I ride western and im pretty sure my horse has never seen an english saddle. Im not to comfortable in it anymore. Hes only a 4 yo QH.
Ive never competed before just usually pleasure trail riding. But my horse is fast, and very showy [a nice deep black] so he stands out.
There is a schooling show in July at my barn. Is it only english riders that jump? I would only be doing the green div. Basic walk and trot to get him used to other horses.
So, is it only english riders that jump?
Mainly it is English riders that jump, but my whole family has gamed, and in one of the gaming events we did, was an obstacle course thing, and it was like a speed trail class, and it was for western riders, and we had to jump a low log as one of the obstacles.
If you plan on showing, if you decide to jump you will only be allowed to jump in an English saddle. I know when I'm at home on the trail in a western saddle, I'll jump something low, but it's not as much fun as jumping with an English saddle, because the horn gets in your way. One time I got my horn hooked under my bra (I lost my balance when we came down) and when I sat up my bra broke. Haha.
But I recommend having several lessons in English with a good steady English trained horse so oyu can get used to the different stirrup length and balance and rein position, and after you're comfortable with it, try you QH on it. I'm sure he'll do great.
Or if you want to show, and stick to Western, try gaming or Western Pleasure. Although since your horse is relatively young, I don't recommend gaming right now. He should learn the patterns slowly at first. Introduce him to barrels and poles and such at a jog, and then lope, and just keep increasing the pace after he understands so that you don't turn him sour.
